History's of Pune

                                     * INTRODUCTION *


The city of Pune was known as Poona during British rule. Poona Municipality was established in 1858. A railway line from Bombay to the city opened in 1858, run by the Great Indian Peninsula Railway (GIPR). Navi Peth, Ganj Peth (now renamed Mahatma Phule Peth) were developed during the British Raj.




What is Pune known for?


Pune holds the status of the cultural capital of Maharashtra. Pune is Bastian of Maharashtrian culture and hosts amazing aesthetic festivals like Ganesha Chaturthi & Janamashthmi. The famous Dagdu Seth Ganapathi Temple in the city is one of the most popular religious places in India.




Why is Pune famous in history?


Called “Queen of the Deccan,” Pune is the cultural capital of the Maratha peoples. The city first gained importance as the capital of the Bhonsle Marathas in the 17th century. It was temporarily captured by the Mughals but again served as the official Maratha capital from 1714 until its fall to the British in 1817.



How did Pune get its name?


“Vishaya“ means land and “Punaka“ and “Punya“ mean holy. Noted history scholar Pandurang Balkawade said the city was known as “Kasbe Pune“ when in the command of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's father, Shahaji Raje Bhosale. It became “Poona“ in the British regime in 1857 and was last changed to Pune in 1978.

Shaniwar Wada is a historical fortification in the city of Pune, India. Built in 1732, it was the great seat of the Peshwas of the Maratha Empire until 1818. Following the rise of the Maratha Empire, the palace became the center of Indian politics in the 18th century.

Dagdusheth ganpati temple:





The temple was founded in 1893 by Dagadusheth Halwai, a sweetmart seller who became a wealthy businessman. Halwai had lost his son the previous year, and at the request of his guru created murtis (image of a deity) of Ganesha and Dattatreya. He later established the Halwai Ganapati Trust.
